AIMS-Sénégal started in 2008 as an initiative of cofounders Vincent Rivasseau and Mamadou Sanghare. They were inspired by the framework provided by the AIMS-NEI, and by the vision of Neil Turok of a network of AIMS institutes which should cover all Africa by 2020.
The AIMS-Sénégal institute rapidly received full support from Maitre Abdoulaye Wade, Président of Sénégal, and from the government and all universities in Sénégal. It gained also the support of main overseas universities, including in term Europe, America and Asia.
The opening of AIMS-Sénégal in September 2011, as the second free-standing institute and main node of the AIMS network is a key step on the road to a fully coordinated panafrican AIMS university in the service of science and Africa.
The map below shows the countries of origin of the alumni and students of AIMS (South Africa). They come from all over Africa, but with a certain deficit around the westernmost part of Africa. The opening of AIMS-Sénégal will achieve the greening of this map. Soon the AIMS network should fully serve all regions and countries of Africa!
